Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has challenged students of St. Mary’s Kibabii High School to remain focused on their education, embrace discipline, and pursue excellence as key ingredients for success in life.

The governor, an alumnus of the school who studied there between 1977 and 1980, made an emotional return to his former institution, where he reflected on how the values and lessons he acquired during his school years helped shape his leadership journey and personal character.

Addressing students, teachers, and school administrators, Lusaka encouraged learners not to allow their backgrounds or current circumstances to define their future.

“Your background is not your ceiling; it is your foundation. What matters most is how you use your time, the discipline you build, and the choices you make every day,” Lusaka told the students.

He urged them to remain committed to their studies, avoid negative influences, and strive for excellence both in academics and personal conduct.

The governor noted that integrity, hard work, and consistency remain essential virtues for anyone seeking success in education, leadership, and other aspects of life.

“Every great leader starts somewhere. What determines success is the willingness to stay focused, work hard, and remain disciplined despite challenges,” he said.

Lusaka also emphasized the importance of respecting teachers and school administrators, saying discipline within the school environment often lays the foundation for future achievements.

He encouraged students to take advantage of leadership opportunities available within the school, noting that such experiences help build confidence, responsibility, and decision-making skills.

Reflecting on his own journey from the classrooms of Kibabii to public service, the governor said the institution played a significant role in shaping his resilience and leadership qualities.

“The lessons I learned here helped shape my character and prepared me for the responsibilities I hold today. Never lose hope, because perseverance always yields results,” he said.

Beyond motivating the students, Lusaka announced plans to spearhead the revival of the Kibabii Alumni Association, describing it as an important platform for reconnecting former students with their alma mater.

According to the governor, a vibrant alumni network would help support the school through mentorship programs, infrastructure development, scholarships, career guidance, and other initiatives aimed at improving learning outcomes.

“We must reconnect as old boys and support the institution that gave us a foundation in life. A strong alumni association will ensure mentorship, resources, and opportunities flow back to Kibabii for the benefit of current and future students,” he said.

He added that successful former students have a responsibility to give back to the institution that helped shape their lives, noting that collective efforts from alumni could further elevate the school’s status as a centre of excellence.

School administrators welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely move that could help address development needs while exposing students to mentorship and practical life experiences from accomplished alumni.

Students who attended the event also expressed enthusiasm, saying the governor’s story and message inspired them to work harder toward achieving their goals.

The visit ended with a call for unity among Kibabii alumni, with Lusaka urging former students to take pride in their shared heritage and work together to support the growth and transformation of the school.

He reaffirmed his commitment to mobilizing fellow alumni and championing initiatives that will strengthen the institution and help nurture future generations of leaders.
