Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii is pointing to his administration’s development record as he prepares to defend his seat in the 2027 General Election, with several potential challengers already positioning themselves for the race.

Bii says more than 70 per cent of projects initiated by his administration have been completed, while others are at different stages of implementation.

The governor has linked the progress to his Nguzo Kumi, or 10-point development agenda, which focuses on sectors including roads, healthcare, water, education and agriculture.

According to the county government, more than 1,200 kilometres of roads were graded during the 2025/26 financial year. More than 30 bridges and box culverts were also completed during the period.

The county has set aside Sh415 million in the 2026/27 financial year for flagship road projects. The programme includes construction of bridges and box culverts, road tarmacking in the county’s new municipalities and drainage works in areas affected by poor stormwater management.

The administration has also highlighted progress in healthcare, with projects in areas including Ziwa, Burnt Forest, Moiben and Huruma either completed or nearing completion.

Bii has further promoted agricultural diversification, including efforts to encourage farmers to invest in coffee and other cash crops.

His supporters have cited these projects as evidence of the administration’s performance since it took office in 2022.

Benjamin Leting, who leads a group supporting the governor, has praised the administration’s work in education, healthcare and infrastructure. He also pointed to the expansion of Early Childhood Development Education facilities, the school milk programme and employment of teachers.

The governor’s development record, however, is being tested against growing political competition ahead of the 2027 election.

Tourism Principal Secretary Julius Bitok has declared his interest in the governor’s position. Bitok and Bii faced each other during the 2022 United Democratic Alliance nominations, which Bii won before proceeding to secure the governorship.

Businessman Bundotich Zedekiah Kiprop Buzeki is also associated with the race, while Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Uasin Gishu chairman Willy Kenei and Competition Authority of Kenya Director General David Rotuk have been mentioned among those seeking the seat. Rotuk confirmed his intention to contest in July, citing healthcare, governance and service delivery among the issues he intends to focus on.

Bii has dismissed the emerging challenge and maintained that his record will form the basis of his bid for another term.

He has urged his political opponents to reconsider their campaigns against him, arguing that his administration’s projects will speak for themselves.

The governor’s second-term campaign is therefore expected to place considerable attention on completed and ongoing projects as the county moves closer to the 2027 election.

At the same time, his challengers are expected to scrutinise service delivery, unfinished projects and other issues affecting residents as they build their respective campaigns.

The Uasin Gishu contest is likely to gain momentum as political parties prepare for their nomination processes and aspirants intensify mobilisation across the county.
