Bishop Paul Gathuo of the Akorino Israel Assembly challenges the Majority Leader's conduct, urging respect for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and calling for leadership accountability

The Akorino Israel Assembly of Kenya has strongly criticized the Leader of the Majority in the National Assembly, Kimani Ichung’wa, accusing him of persistently disrespecting Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The church leadership, spearheaded by their National Patron, Bishop Paul Gathuo, has expressed deep concern over what they term as a continuous display of arrogance by Ichung’wa towards the Deputy President.

Bishop Gathuo, speaking on behalf of the Akorino Israel Assembly, condemned Ichung’wa’s behavior, particularly in instances where he allegedly showed open disrespect to the Deputy President in the presence of President William Ruto. “We are dismayed by the Leader of the Majority’s display of arrogance and pride when referring to the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya. Such behavior is unbecoming of a leader in his position. We demand that he respects the office and stature of the Deputy President. Enough is enough,” Bishop Gathuo declared.

The Bishop further questioned Ichung’wa’s motivations, hinting at possible underlying issues such as jealousy or personal animosity. “Why would he keep attacking the Deputy President? Is he jealous, or what seems to be going on? We can no longer entertain his rhetoric,” Bishop Gathuo stated emphatically. He added that Ichung’wa’s actions do not meet the threshold of leadership expected from someone holding such a critical position in the government, and therefore, called for his removal from the post of Leader of the Majority.

In a broader context, Bishop Gathuo, who is known to be a close confidant of President William Ruto in the Rift Valley, also issued a stern warning to other leaders from the Mt. Kenya region. He cautioned them against engaging in campaigns aimed at undermining the Deputy President, including the recent push for his impeachment. “We cannot have leaders from Central Kenya moving around preaching disunity within the Mt. Kenya region while simultaneously advocating for unity in other parts of Kenya. This is nothing short of double-speak,” he remarked. The Bishop defended the Deputy President’s efforts to unite the Mt. Kenya region, arguing that all other regions are striving for unity, so there is no reason why the GEMA community should not do the same. “There is nothing wrong with the Deputy President calling for a united Mt. Kenya region. All other regions are uniting; why not the GEMA community?” he questioned.

This statement from the Akorino Israel Assembly comes in the wake of a recent meeting held in Eldoret, where a faction of Mt. Kenya and Rift Valley leaders openly defied the Deputy President and declared their intention to push for his impeachment. The meeting was led by MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, alongside six other MPs, including Dagoretti MP John Kiarie, Limuru MP Eng. John Kiragu, Kabete MP James Githua, Nyeri Central MP Duncan Mathenge, and UDA Nominated MP Joseph Wainaina. The declarations made at this meeting have sparked significant controversy, particularly within the GEMA community in the Rift Valley, many of whom have expressed dissatisfaction with the anti-Gachagua sentiments.

The Akorino Israel Assembly’s strong stance on this issue reflects a growing tension within political and religious circles, as the debate over Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s role and treatment within the government continues to intensify. Bishop Gathuo’s remarks underscore the church’s expectation that all leaders, regardless of their political affiliations, should uphold respect and unity within the nation, especially towards high-ranking officials like the Deputy President.
