Duale Assumes Role as Acting CS for Agriculture
“These programs have the potential to significantly improve agricultural yields and contribute to a stronger rural economy,” he remarked.
Aden Duale, the Cabinet Secretary for Forestry, Climate Change, and Environment, has officially taken up the role of Acting Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, following his appointment by President William Ruto.
Duale reported to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development headquarters to assume his new responsibilities, signaling a seamless transition as the government pushes forward with critical agricultural reforms.
During a meeting with outgoing Agriculture CS Dr. Andrew Karanja Mwihia, Duale engaged in discussions on initiatives designed to boost Kenya’s agricultural productivity.
Among the highlighted programs were the mass livestock vaccination campaign aimed at improving meat quality for global export markets, the distribution of subsidized fertilizers ahead of the long rains, and the rollout of milk coolers to enhance the dairy sector.
“These initiatives are vital for enhancing food security, reducing post-harvest losses, and improving farmers’ access to markets,” Duale stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to empowering rural communities.
The mass livestock vaccination, in particular, is expected to increase the global competitiveness of Kenyan meat products, while the fertilizer subsidy program seeks to bolster crop yields in time for the upcoming planting season.
Outgoing CS Dr. Mwihia, who is transitioning to his new role as Kenya’s ambassador to Brazil, expressed confidence in the initiatives’ ability to drive agricultural growth and foster rural economic stability.
“These programs have the potential to significantly improve agricultural yields and contribute to a stronger rural economy,” he remarked.
The transition was also marked by the presence of key officials, including Principal Secretaries Dr. Paul Kiprono (Agriculture) and Hon. Jonathan Mueke (Livestock), who reiterated their support for the outlined programs.
Duale will oversee the Agriculture docket temporarily, pending the parliamentary vetting of Hon. Mutahi Kagwe, nominated as the new CS for Agriculture.
The government’s focus on agriculture aligns with its broader vision of achieving food security and economic resilience in the face of climate change and global market challenges.
As Duale steps into this pivotal role, all eyes will be on the Ministry of Agriculture to deliver on its ambitious targets, ensuring Kenya’s agricultural sector remains a cornerstone of the national economy.
