The Uasin Gishu County Department of Agriculture and Agribusiness, in collaboration with SNV, hosted a farmer’s field day in Soy Sub-County over the weekend. The event brought together farmers from Soy, Moiben, and Kesses Sub-Counties to celebrate the graduation of participants who have successfully completed all modules of the Regenerative Agriculture program.

The initiative, known as the REALMS (Regenerative Agriculture for Livelihoods and Sustaining Ecosystem Management) project, is designed to promote a farmer-to-farmer training model, utilizing peer-to-peer learning to enhance agricultural practices within the region.

Addressing the attendees, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Mr. Edward Sawe, encouraged farmers to join cooperative societies to strengthen their bargaining power and access a broader range of resources and markets.

Mr. Sawe also urged farmers to consider cultivating sunflowers following the maize harvest, highlighting that those who plant over 1,000 acres of sunflowers will be provided with sunflower and oil pressing machines to streamline production and processing.

“For a long time, farmers in Uasin Gishu County have relied solely on maize and wheat as their cash crops,” Mr. Sawe remarked. “It is now imperative that they diversify to secure better incomes.”
