The Nakuru Chief Magistrate court on Wednesday sentenced a man to 30 years in prison or a fine of Ksh15 million for vandalizing a 600-meter electric conductor valued at Ksh.60,000.
The suspect Edwin Kiplangat was apprehended on 26th July while in possession of the conductor at Stoo Mbili Township in Njoro sub-county within Nakuru County.
The sentence comes a week after another suspect was arrested in Timau town within Meru County following an arraignment at Nanyuki Law courts where he was sentenced to 10 years in prison with an option of a Ksh.5 million fine.
Kenya Power Acting Security Services Manager Paul Nyaga Gichovi welcomed the judgment stating that it will be a warning to avoid similar crimes.
Vandalism and theft of electricity pose great danger to the perpetrator and also those around them who are exposed to sub-standard power connections, moreover, these crimes compromise the quality of the power supply and this leads to the loss of revenue by the company.
“Through the collaboration with various government institutions, the company has improved the surveillance on its infrastructure to eradicate illegal activities from the network” Paul stated.
“I wish to thank the Judiciary for the leverage they have accorded this exercise and we call the public to join in this fight by reporting any suspicious activities on the network to the nearest police station or Kenya Power Offices.” He added.
