Human rights defenders in Uasingishu county have moved to court requesting a warrant of arrest against four Uasin gishu county askaris who are purported to have seriously attacked a street vendor within the Court cells located within the County headquarters.
Kimutai Kirui of The centre against Torture says the Four County askaris are said to be Notorious and have over the years harassed small business traders ,maiming some of them and even stealing some of their wares ,
“These Notorious officers arrested one Alex Kirwa a hawker within the Eldoret CBD, they took him to the county court cells where at around 10:00pm started beating him up and seriously injured him ,one of the magistrates who at the time was within the courts heard the outcry and witnessed the harassment ,we demand for the immediate arrest of the said officers”Said Mr Kirui.

The Human rights defenders on Wednesday petitioned the Uasingishu County police Commander Ayub Gitonga complaining against the perpetual human rights violations by the county askaris who on numerous occasions have had police protection.
The Human right defenders are also pressuring the county government of Uasin Gishu to suspend County askaris who are currently faced by court cases of harassment and human rights violations .
Two weeks ago Police engaged the street families in street demos after the latter complained that one of their colleagues had been attacked and killed by the county askaris in an ongoing exercise to remove them from the Eldoret central business district .
The Uasingishu County woman rep Gladys Shollei has also condemned the manner in which the county askaris have been harassing and torturing the small traders and called on the County Governor Jonathan Bii to retrain the county askaris ,
“The governor must address this issue of continued county askaris harassment against the Small traders , this is against the policy of current administration that seeks to empower the small traders, we must change their DNA that is geared towards harassing traders and violating their Rights “Said Shollei during the Madaraka day celebration held Thursday.
