Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has inspected the ongoing construction of the Kiminini Modern Market in Trans Nzoia County as the government steps up efforts to improve facilities for traders and small-scale businesses.

The 500-stall market is expected to provide traders with modern working spaces and facilities, including storage areas, cold rooms, eateries, a social hall and an ICT hub.

Murkomen said the project forms part of wider government investments aimed at creating a better business environment for farmers and small traders.

During his visit to Kiminini Town, the Interior CS also urged residents to take advantage of ongoing registration services to obtain national identification cards and register as voters.

He said access to an identification document was a basic right and an important gateway to employment, government services and participation in national decision-making.

Murkomen said the government would not allow citizens to face discrimination based on their location or ethnicity.

He also encouraged Kenyans living outside the country to participate in the electoral process, noting that citizens in neighbouring countries also have a right to register as voters.

The CS said the government was strengthening efforts to combat illicit alcohol, narcotic drugs and other forms of contraband, including goods smuggled across Kenya’s borders.

He called for sustained enforcement and cooperation between security agencies and local communities to protect young people from the effects of alcohol and drug abuse.

Murkomen also inspected construction works on the Kiminini-Ndalu Road, a project expected to improve transport and connectivity within the area.

He further visited Kiminini Comprehensive School, where classrooms are being constructed to support Junior School and lower primary learners.

The projects are part of ongoing government efforts to expand public infrastructure while improving access to essential services and economic opportunities.

Murkomen was accompanied by Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau, Endebess MP Robert Pukose and County MP Lilian Siyoi.

Others present included Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr Abdi Hassan, Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Mathews Ndanyi, Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Alason Hussein and several Members of the County Assembly.
