Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly felt betrayed by Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus following a disagreement over his treatment during a recent match, according to Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre.
Aguirre, speaking on El Chiringuito, claimed Ronaldo’s decision to leave Portugal was linked to a private meeting involving the forward, Jesus and the president of the Portuguese Football Federation.
According to Aguirre, Jesus apologised to Ronaldo during the meeting over how he handled the player’s warm-up during Sunday’s match. Ronaldo had reportedly spent about 30 minutes preparing to enter the game but was ultimately not brought on.
Aguirre said Jesus acknowledged that he had handled the situation poorly and promised Ronaldo that he would publicly apologise during his next press conference.
However, the journalist claimed that the coach did not follow through with that promise.
Instead, Jesus reportedly described Ronaldo as a player like others during his press conference, rather than publicly accepting responsibility for the decision that had caused the disagreement.
The comments are said to have angered Ronaldo, who allegedly felt that the coach’s public remarks contradicted what had been discussed privately.
Aguirre described the situation as a major source of frustration for the Portugal captain, saying Ronaldo believed Jesus had broken an agreement made during their private meeting.
The report suggests that Ronaldo interpreted the situation as a betrayal, particularly because he had allegedly been assured that the matter would be addressed publicly.
The disagreement comes as Ronaldo continues to play a prominent role for Portugal despite being one of the most experienced players in the national team. His influence and status have often made decisions surrounding his playing time a major talking point whenever he is involved with the national side.
Aguirre said Ronaldo’s reaction was ultimately to decide that he would leave rather than continue with the situation.
The claims have added another layer to the reported tension between Ronaldo and Jesus, although the details of the private meeting and the alleged promises made by the coach have not been independently confirmed in the information provided.
The report therefore presents Aguirre’s account of events rather than an independently established explanation for Ronaldo’s decision.
For now, attention remains on how the relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus develops and whether the two will address the reported disagreement publicly.
