Kenya and Egypt are exploring stronger health cooperation, with discussions focusing on investment in Nyatike Sub-County Hospital to improve maternal, child and surgical care.

Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga held talks with Egypt’s Ambassador to Kenya, Hatem Yousri Hosni, on strengthening collaboration between the two countries in the health sector.

Oluga was accompanied by Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko and Nyatike MP Tom Odege during the engagement.

The meeting followed proposals submitted by the State Department for Medical Services to the Egyptian government in May 2026 through the Kenya Mission in Egypt and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The proposals seek Egyptian support for strategic investments aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure and services in Kenya.

A key focus of the discussions was the proposed investment in Nyatike Sub-County Hospital in Migori County. The planned support is expected to strengthen the facility’s capacity to provide maternal and child health services, as well as surgical care.

The engagement comes amid efforts by the national and county governments to improve access to specialised healthcare services and strengthen public health facilities.

For residents of Nyatike and surrounding areas, enhanced capacity at the sub-county hospital could reduce the need to travel to larger referral facilities for maternity and surgical services.

The talks also underline Kenya’s efforts to pursue international partnerships to support investment in the health sector.

Egypt has maintained bilateral relations with Kenya in several areas, including trade, infrastructure, education and healthcare. The latest engagement seeks to extend that cooperation into strategic health investments at the local level.

The proposed support for Nyatike Sub-County Hospital will require further discussions between the Kenyan and Egyptian governments before details on financing, infrastructure development and implementation are finalised.

The State Department for Medical Services is expected to continue engaging relevant government agencies and Egyptian authorities as the proposals progress.
