KUCCPS Clarifies Course Transfer Rules for First-Year Students

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has clarified that first-year students seeking to change their courses within the same university should deal directly with their institutions.
The placement agency said interfaculty transfers are handled internally by universities and do not require KUCCPS intervention.
The clarification comes after a number of first-year students sought guidance on how to change courses while remaining in the universities to which they had been placed.
KUCCPS advised affected students to approach their respective universities for information on the application procedure, requirements and deadlines.
“Interested students should engage their respective universities as the process is initiated internally at the universities,” KUCCPS said.
The clarification means students who want to move from one faculty or school to another within the same institution should not submit their requests through the KUCCPS placement system.
Instead, universities will determine the conditions under which such transfers can be considered, including available spaces, academic qualifications and other institutional requirements.
The issue comes as thousands of students begin settling into university life after joining various institutions following the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
Some students may seek to change their programmes after discovering that their assigned courses do not match their academic interests, career plans or qualifications.
KUCCPS, however, distinguished internal course changes from transfers between different universities.
Students who want to move from one university to another can still pursue inter-institutional transfers through the placement service.
The agency has also maintained that candidates who missed the recent transfer window have another opportunity to apply.
According to KUCCPS, students who sat the 2025 KCSE examination remain eligible to seek an inter-university transfer in 2026 and/or 2027.
“If they sat for KCSE in 2025, they are eligible for transfer this year, 2026, and/or next year 2027,” the agency said.
KUCCPS is currently processing transfer applications submitted through its system.
Students who have applied for inter-university transfers have been advised to regularly check their KUCCPS portals for updates on the status of their requests.
The agency said successful applicants will receive their transfer letters through their student portals once the processing is completed.
The latest clarification is expected to help first-year students distinguish between interfaculty transfers, which are handled by individual universities, and inter-university transfers, which fall under the KUCCPS placement system.
