Three members of the same family were killed after a fire engulfed their home in Murara Village, Kianjokoma, Embu North, in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving residents in shock and prompting a police investigation.

The victims were identified as 60-year-old Audecia Ruguru, her 50-year-old sister Lucy Rwamba and Rwamba’s 20-year-old son, Rogers Gitonga, who lived with autism.

Retired area chief Mark Nyaga Karangi said the fire broke out at about 2 a.m. while the family was asleep.

According to Karangi, neighbors were awakened by screams coming from the burning house and rushed to help. Despite their efforts, the flames spread rapidly, trapping the three occupants inside before rescuers could reach them.

“The fire intensified very quickly, making it impossible to save those who were inside,” Karangi said.

The bodies of the three victims were later recovered from the charred remains of the house. Authorities said the bodies were severely burned.

The tragedy has cast a pall of grief over Murara Village, where residents described the family as peaceful and well-known within the community.

Many said the death of Rogers Gitonga, a young man living with autism, had deepened the community’s sorrow.

Police and detectives visited the scene and have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire. Officials said forensic examinations will help determine how the blaze started.

The victims’ bodies have been moved to a local mortuary, where they await formal identification procedures and postmortem examinations.

The incident is the latest in a series of fatal residential fires reported across the country, renewing calls for greater public awareness on fire safety and emergency preparedness, particularly in rural communities where access to firefighting equipment is limited.

Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and report any information that could assist investigators as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the deadly fire.
