Ecuador rallied from an early deficit to defeat Germany 2-1 on Thursday, securing a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage with a spirited comeback that showcased the South Americans’ resilience and attacking quality.
The victory sent Ecuador into the Round of 32, where they could face England, while Germany, despite the defeat, advanced as Group E winners after having already secured qualification before kickoff.
Germany struck almost immediately, taking the lead in the second minute through Leroy Sané. Florian Wirtz threaded a precise pass into the penalty area, allowing Sané to fire past Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez for an early advantage.
The goal sparked protests from Ecuador, whose players argued that midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović had committed a high-boot foul on Pedro Vite in the build-up.
The referee allowed play to continue, and the goal stood.Rather than losing momentum, Ecuador responded with urgency.Backed by a vocal sea of yellow-clad supporters, Ecuador equalized seven minutes later when winger Nilson Angulo, who plays for English club Sunderland, drilled a low shot beyond German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
The equalizer transformed the contest, with Ecuador growing in confidence while Germany struggled to regain control.Ecuador continued to press after halftime, creating the better chances as Germany appeared content to manage the game, knowing their place in the knockout rounds was already assured.
Their persistence paid off in the 77th minute.Following a corner kick, Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest inside the penalty area, beating Neuer to the loose ball and firing home the winner to send Ecuador’s supporters into jubilant celebrations.
Germany pushed forward in search of an equalizer during the closing minutes, but Ecuador’s defense held firm with a series of crucial blocks and clearances to preserve the historic victory.
Angulo emerged as one of the game’s standout performers, combining relentless energy with attacking creativity. His equalizing goal helped swing momentum in Ecuador’s favor and underlined the attacking threat that had been missing in the team’s opening two matches.
Before Thursday’s victory, Ecuador had failed to score in Group E after drawing with Curaçao and losing to Ivory Coast. The breakthrough against Germany highlighted the quality within a squad featuring Premier League midfielder Moisés Caicedo and several emerging young talents.
For Germany, the defeat ended an otherwise solid group-stage campaign on a disappointing note. The four-time world champions looked below their usual standards after making several changes to the lineup, although the result did not affect their qualification.
Ecuador’s victory also dealt a blow to Scotland’s hopes of advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams by tightening the race for the remaining knockout spots. With confidence restored and momentum on their side, Ecuador now head into the knockout stage believing they can challenge any opponent after producing one of the most impressive comebacks of the group phase.
