Cristiano Ronaldo rolled back the years with a record-breaking performance as Portugal thrashed Uzbekistan 5-0 in a dominant FIFA World Cup Group K encounter, strengthening their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
The 41-year-old captain became the first footballer in history to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments, producing a brilliant display that silenced critics and reminded the world why he remains one of the game’s greatest players.
Portugal entered the match under pressure following a disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening fixture. Questions had been raised about Ronaldo’s influence after a subdued performance in that game, where he managed only 25 touches throughout the contest.
However, it took the veteran striker just six minutes to answer those doubts.Joao Cancelo delivered a dangerous cross from the right flank and Ronaldo reacted quickest inside the penalty area, firing a low half-volley past Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov to give Portugal an early lead.
The goal secured Ronaldo’s place in football history as the first player to score at six separate World Cups. It also made him the second-oldest goalscorer in World Cup history behind Cameroonian legend Roger Milla, who scored at the age of 42 during the 1994 tournament.
Portugal continued to dominate possession and doubled their advantage in the 17th minute. Left-back Nuno Mendes surprised both opponents and teammates when he stepped up to take a free-kick from 20 yards and drilled a low effort directly into the net.
Uzbekistan briefly believed they had found a way back into the contest when Aziz G’aniev unleashed a stunning strike. Their celebrations were cut short, however, after the goal was disallowed for a foul by Abbosbek Fayzullaev on Cancelo during the build-up.
The European side maintained complete control and struck again six minutes before halftime.Bruno Fernandes won possession near the centre circle before threading a perfectly weighted pass into Ronaldo’s path.
The Portuguese captain showed remarkable composure, sliding the ball into the bottom corner for his second goal of the evening and Portugal’s third.
The brace was particularly significant for Ronaldo. It marked only the second time he had scored more than once in a World Cup match and saw him surpass the legendary Eusebio as Portugal’s all-time leading scorer at the tournament.
Portugal’s dominance continued after the break. Uzbekistan’s defensive struggles were highlighted when goalkeeper Nematov inadvertently turned the ball into his own net after failing to deal with a dangerous corner kick, handing Portugal a fourth goal.
Ronaldo came close to completing a memorable hat-trick when his clever lofted effort beat the goalkeeper but was dramatically cleared off the line by defender Abdukodir Khusanov.
With teammates eager to help their captain complete his treble, Portugal continued to create chances. The fifth goal eventually arrived in the 87th minute, though it came from substitute Rafael Leao, who blasted an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.
The emphatic victory lifted Portugal to the top of Group K and restored confidence within Roberto Martinez’s squad ahead of a decisive clash against Colombia.
Meanwhile, Uzbekistan remain without a point after two matches and now face an uphill battle to keep their qualification hopes alive.Ronaldo’s performance was the headline story of the night.
After enduring criticism and an 11-match goal drought in major international tournaments, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner delivered a timely reminder of his enduring quality on football’s biggest stage.
At the final whistle, an emotional Ronaldo celebrated in front of the cameras, repeatedly shouting, “I’m back.”On the evidence of his historic display in Houston, few would argue otherwise.
Portugal will face Colombia in their final group match in what is expected to be a battle for top spot, while Uzbekistan take on DR Congo knowing only a victory can keep their World Cup dream alive.
