Beyond the daily headlines, newsroom deadlines, cameras, and microphones, Hubz Media Eldoret is championing a new culture focused on mental wellness, teamwork, and professional growth among journalists and media practitioners.
The media hub has been running a month-long awareness campaign across its social media platforms aimed at creating awareness on Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, encouraging open conversations around mental health challenges affecting men.
Through the campaign, Hubz Media Eldoret has focused on addressing common myths surrounding men’s mental health, while encouraging men to break the silence, seek support, and embrace conversations that promote emotional well-being.
The initiative is part of the media hub’s broader commitment to creating a supportive working environment where journalists and content creators can thrive both professionally and personally.
Every Friday, members of the Hubz Media family take time away from the demanding newsroom environment to participate in team-building activities designed to promote relaxation, interaction, and stronger workplace relationships.
Through shared meals, music, games, laughter, and open conversations, colleagues strengthen bonds that extend beyond professional duties.
Speaking during one of the team-building sessions, Hubz Media Eldoret Vice Chair Edmond Kipng’eno said the initiative is important in helping journalists manage workplace pressure while improving productivity and teamwork.
“Journalists are known to be occupied by work from Monday to Friday. We saw it fit that the matter of interaction and being able to break that monotony is important because when you work for a long time without having time to break and relax, you may not be able to be productive,” Kipng’eno stated.
The media hub has also been working closely with partners, including Transparency International and the Kenya Red Cross, among others, to strengthen the capacity of its members through mental health training programmes.
The trainings have equipped members with knowledge in areas including counselling, psychology, and mental health awareness, enabling them to better understand mental health issues and support conversations within their communities.
As part of the campaign, students attached to the media hub have encouraged men to openly discuss their challenges and seek assistance whenever needed.
The weekly gatherings provide journalists, photographers, videographers, presenters, and content creators with an opportunity to recharge, support one another, and build a healthier newsroom culture.
Violet Akinyi, a student attached to Hubz Media Eldoret, said the activities have created a balance between professional responsibilities and personal interaction.
“At Hubz Media Eldoret, it’s not only about work. It is also about team building where we come together, share meals, and also have some games,” Akinyi said.
According to the management, promoting mental wellness among media practitioners is essential because journalists often work under demanding conditions while covering critical issues affecting society.
The organization believes that creativity, collaboration, continuous learning, and emotional support are key ingredients for producing impactful journalism.
Kipng’eno added that setting aside time for interaction and recreational activities helps journalists refresh their minds and strengthen relationships among colleagues.
“We say it is very important that journalists here can interact and engage themselves in various activities including sports. This helps to free up their minds,” he added.
Apart from promoting wellness, Hubz Media Eldoret continues to nurture emerging talent by providing opportunities for journalists, photographers, videographers, presenters, and content creators to sharpen their skills and gain practical experience in media production.
The media hub remains committed to building not only compelling stories but also confident professionals, strong friendships, and a united media family dedicated to making a positive impact in society.
