The 2026 Nairobi City Marathon, somehow managed to grab a big milestone 17,450 runners showed up, and yeah it is the biggest turnout since the race started, tying everything into the idea that Nairobi is turning into one of Kenya’s fastest-growing sporting scenes.
For Race Director Barnaba Korir, it’s bigger than a number on paper. He says it’s years of focus, steady effort, and that shared push from organisers, athletes, sponsors, and the people who just showed up to back it.
Talking about the win, Korir called the record attendance a clear proof of a common plan, one where everyone believed Nairobi could host a world class road race, and not just “a local event” but something that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best marathons globally.
“This milestone is not just about numbers . It is about teamwork, commitment, and the collective belief that Nairobi can host a world-class road race that competes with the best marathons in the world,” said Korir.
Along the course, Nairobi’s roads became a live sports celebration , with elite runners, regular participants, and first-timers all mixing together, which is rare. Spectators lined up in large groups to cheer , while volunteers and support crews hustled all day, making sure things stayed organized and smooth.
The overall vibe was intense, and it also shows the race popularity keeps rising. More runners keep coming from across Kenya, plus interest keeps reaching outside borders as well.
Korir also pointed to the many hands behind the scenes, volunteers, technical officials, medical personnel, security teams, sponsors, and event partners, all of them part of the engine that made the day work.
“Many people only see the athletes on race day,but there are hundreds of individuals who work for months behind the scenes to make this event possible. Their dedication and professionalism are what made this year’s marathon a success,” he said.
He further credited the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, saying the ministry played a key role in pushing improvements and widening the race’s reach, not only in size but in standards too.
One standout moment was when Salim Mvurya attended, and many took that as a clear sign of government seriousness around sports development , and youth empowerment as well.
Korir explained that government support has been crucial for sharpening the marathon profile , and for reinforcing Kenya’s image as a global sporting destination.
The race director also gave recognition to Jackson Tuwei for his leadership in moving athletics forward in the country.
“His leadership and unwavering support have contributed immensely to maintaining Kenya’s position as a global athletics powerhouse,” Korir said.
Kenya’s deep long-distance legacy has produced some of the world’s most celebrated athletes, and organisers feel the Nairobi City Marathon is becoming more and more a serious stage for spotting future champions, while at the same time promoting wellness, fitness routines, and healthier everyday life for the wider public.
And it’s not only about racing. The marathon keeps creating economic and tourism momentum by drawing visitors, supporting local shops and services, and putting Nairobi under an international spotlight.
Now that preparations for upcoming editions are underway, organisers say this record participation has strengthened their drive, they want to build even more from here.
“We are proud of what we have achieved, but this is only the beginning,” Korir said.
“The overwhelming support from athletes, fans, partners, and Nairobi residents shows that the marathon has become something truly special. We move forward with even greater ambition.”
With participation reaching levels that feel unprecedented and public excitement still climbing, the Nairobi City Marathon is steadily setting itself as one of Africa’s leading road races, and also an increasingly meaningful part of the global athletics calendar.
