The Colombian military plane crashed when it was carrying more than 120 people, resulting in 66 deaths. The plane took off early on Monday according to official reports but crashed shortly after takeoff.

The C-130 Hercules aircraft had 125 people on board, which included soldiers, crew members, and police officers. The plane crashed shortly after its departure from Puerto Leguizamo, which is located near Colombia’s southern border with Ecuador and Peru. The jungle contained wrecked plane parts which burned while other parts of the plane burned.

Military sources indicated that among those who died were 58 soldiers, six air force personnel, and two police officers. The death toll began at 33 but increased when rescue teams continued their work at the crash site. The surviving victims required medical assistance, while responders worked to transfer them to more secure areas.

Authorities have launched investigations to determine what led to the crash. The cause is currently unknown according to officials, but they continue to investigate. The area involved in the incident currently faces increased military presence because Colombian and Ecuadorian forces are fighting against drug trafficking organizations and armed groups.

The site had extensive destruction which resulted in debris that extended throughout the forest while thick smoke rose above the tree line. Civilians who rushed to the site were seen near the remains of the aircraft, including its tail section marked FAC 1016.

Colombia’s Defense Minister, Pedro Sanchez, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, describing the crash as a painful moment for the nation. He stated that the investigation into the disaster’s cause remained uncompleted, but he requested prayers and solidarity during this difficult time.

General Carlos Fernando Silva Rueda confirmed that 114 soldiers and 11 crew members were on board the ill-fated flight, which was headed to a nearby Amazon outpost. He noted that the rescue teams faced significant obstacles because of the area, which lacked proper infrastructure.

Putumayo region governor Jhon Gabriel Molina highlighted difficulties in evacuating victims, noting that the small airport and remote location were complicating rescue and recovery efforts.

Residents near the crash site described hearing a loud explosion before seeing the aircraft flying unusually low. One local farmer recounted how the plane passed close to his home before going down.

President Gustavo Petro described the horrific accident as an incident that needed better military gear for the country. He did not attribute the crash directly to the aircraft’s condition, which needed upgrades according to his statement.

The C-130 Hercules aircraft experienced its second crash in South America within a month. A similar incident occurred in Bolivia in late February, where a military cargo plane crashed while landing, resulting in multiple fatalities.
