The Mukuru Housing Estate Phase II was launched on Thursday by President William Ruto. This is yet another significant milestone in the Affordable Housing Programme of the Government, which is marked by the completion and handover of 4,536 newly built studio apartments.
During the handover event, President Ruto personally handed the keys to some beneficiaries who were living under various degrees of penetration in the slums due to the lack of services such as reliable water supply, proper sanitation, electricity, and road networks. He stated, “The project goes beyond a house; it restores dignity to the people and offers them more comforts of life.”
“These houses symbolize dignity, hope, and new beginnings,” President Ruto remarked, adding that what had remained an unfulfilled aspiration for ordinary Kenyans over so many years has now come true.
The design of Mukuru Housing Estate II seeks urban modernity and integrates indispensable services meant to support safe and sustainable communities. Some of the amenities within the estate are centralized clean gas, schools, a police station, and a fire station, services that were previously absent to those residing in informal settlements.
According to President Ruto, the Mukuru project epitomizes the Government’s wider agenda for spearheading inclusive development through affordable housing. He elaborated that similar housing initiatives are going in all 47 counties, and about 240,000 housing units are currently under construction or at various stages of development across the country.
The President added that 480,000 jobs have already been created through the Affordable Housing Programme, primarily benefiting skilled and semi-skilled youth, while providing safe, decent, and affordable housing to Kenyans.
Besides Mukuru Phase II units, the President gave out keys to beneficiaries in other housing projects-laying the grounds for approximately 5,000 units in Riara and about 2,920 units in Muriguini-all geared towards affordable housing in urban centers.
Earlier, President Ruto, together with Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki and other national and local leaders, commissioned several public facilities built to serve the Mukuru community. The facilities include the New Mukuru Level IV Hospital, Mukuru Fire Station, Mukuru Mall, Mukuru Police Station, as well as the New Mukuru Primary School and Pre-School.
Entrusted with the newly established facilities is the hope of improving access to health, education, safety, and emergency response services. The facilities, together with the housing development, will be the beginning of a major turnaround for Mukuru as a fully serviced urban neighborhood, aimed at enhancing the quality of life of the residents.
