Lastly, the government has inducted and trained a total of 319 interns under the Affordable Housing Programme in readiness for deployment to various housing construction projects in Kiambu County in what is seen as a major milestone in enhancing the provision of affordable housing as a result of the increasing urban population. The induction and training of the interns took place at Kiambu National Polytechnic.

The interns are also expected to be placed within the affordable housing projects around the county, where they will help the construction processes as well as the supervision of the projects. Kiambu County is facing rapid growth in terms of urbanization due to the high growth rate of the population and its close proximity to the capital city of Kenya, which is known as Nairobi, and this contributes to the high demand for appropriate and affordable housing.

The one-year internship program will begin in earnest in January 2026. This program will provide the interns with hands-on experience and will also improve efficiency in public service. The interns will be able to learn hands-on how to tackle real-life problems associated with the housing field as they will be involved in project implementation.

While addressing during the induction, Deputy County Commissioner Titus Macharia pointed out that as a training, it encompasses much more than that, aiming to influence the interns to promote integrity, professionalism, and a sense of commitment to service. He also noted that as interns, it was expected that they would conduct themselves to a high standard ethically, which would exemplify the intent behind the Affordable Housing Programme.

County Director of Housing Michael Kiarie, accompanied by the Housing Officer Silvester Murithi, emphasized the significance of safety and proper supervision during the placement of the interns in the project sites. The interns will play a supplementary role in the project, but their contribution is needed to ensure that the projects are undertaken efficiently and to the required standard. The interns will be posted to the housing projects that are nearest to their residence.

This has been appreciated by the beneficiaries of the program, most of whom feel that the intervention presents an opportunity that can help bridge the gap that exists between theoretical knowledge and implementation. One of the interns, Mercy Kioko, feels positive about the program and feels that the intervention presents an important opportunity that can help them gain practical experience. The Affordable Housing Programme still remains one of the major drivers of the development agenda in government, focusing on ensuring access to decent and affordable housing while at the same time providing Job opportunities for young people. Having concluded training for the last batch of interns, namely 319, attention turns to January when they are scheduled to be placed and contribute to housing development initiatives in Kiambu County.
