Police have confirmed that at least six people died following a road accident involving a lorry and a 14-seater matatu in the Mbooni area of Makueni County on Friday, November 21.

According to authorities, the accident occurred at Ngoluni Stage in Mbooni East when a speeding lorry reportedly lost control and collided with a stationary matatu, which was picking up passengers en route to Machakos and Nairobi. Those who witnessed the accident said that the lorry veered off the newly tarred Ngoluni Junction Road before hitting the vehicle.

The accident killed six people on the spot and left several others with serious injuries, who were rushed to Machakos Level Five Hospital and other nearby health facilities in Makueni County. Those killed included four KCSE candidates who were going home after sitting their national examinations, increasing the emotional gravity of the tragedy.

Mbooni East Sub-County Police Commander Ibrahim Karani confirmed that the injured were receiving treatment at Makueni Level Five Hospital, while the bodies of those killed had been transferred to the local mortuary for post-mortem procedures.

In fact, Friday alone proved to be deadly on Kenyan roads as police reported at least 15 fatalities from multiple accidents across the country. The victims were: six passengers, four motorcyclists, four pedestrians and a pedal cyclist. A total of 14 others, including six passengers, three pedestrians, two motorcyclists, and a driver, sustained injuries. Police said that the injured ones were all admitted at various hospitals, where they are receiving medication.

These incidents come amidst a noticeable increase in road accidents over the past two weeks. Last week, another deadly crash occurred along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway when a bus traveling from Kisumu to Mombasa via Nairobi lost control and collided head-on with an oncoming lorry at Kinyambu in Makueni County, claiming several lives.

Data from the NTSA indicate that road accidents remain a key public safety concern. The country recorded 3,890 fatalities on the roads between January and October 2025, an increase from the 3,805 deaths recorded during a similar period last year. Those killed included 1,460 pedestrians, 351 drivers, 378 pillion passengers, 57 pedal cyclists, and 1,000 motor vehicle occupants.

Authorities have called upon drivers to be very careful and follow the traffic rules and avoid over-speeding especially at highways and busy junctions to avoid more loss of life. The tragic deaths of the KCSE candidates have thrown the entire village into mourning, with members of the community demanding the strict enforcement of road safety to protect students and other road users.
