US President Donald Trump ordered the redeployment of two nuclear submarines to unspecified places after he referred to as “highly provocative” remarks made by ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Trump indicated the move was a precaution just in case Medvedev’s words were not just words. “Words have consequences and can sometimes have unintended outcomes. I hope this will not be one of them,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Even though the president did not specify whether the ships are nuclear-armed or nuclear-powered, nor where they were heading, he was firm that the action had been taken with a perspective towards ensuring Americans’ safety. In remarks to the media afterward, Trump said, “A threat was made, and we felt we needed to proceed with caution. It is my duty to protect our people.”

The escalation follows Medvedev’s recent threats against Washington in response to ultimatums presented by Trumpin Ukraine or face hard sanctions. Medvedev, the former deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has repeatedly criticized Trump’s approach, terming him as playing a dangerous “ultimatum game with Russia.”.

Earlier this week, Medvedev referred to Trump’s responsibilities as “theatrical,” and said Russia didn’t care. In a second Telegram posting, he invoked the “dead hand” concept—a term widely used to describe Russia’s automated nuclear retaliatory system.

Trump and Medvedev have been exchanging insults online for weeks, with Trump recently warning Medvedev to “watch his words” and calling him “the failed former president of Russia who thinks he’s still president.”

The pressure comes after Trump set a new deadline of August 8 for Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. Earlier deadlines and threats to impose heavy tariffs on Russia’s exports have not yielded any fruit.

Russia and the United States have the world’s largest nuclear arsenals, both with nuclear submarine fleets. Moscow has issued no official reaction since Trump declared it, though Russian markets plummeted.

Medvedev, who was former president of Russia between 2008-2012, was a loud Kremlin defender of the ongoing invasion of Ukraine and still one of the West’s most robust critics.
