Former Chief Justice David Maraga has announced his intention to run for president in the 2027 general election, drawing swift and enthusiastic support—particularly from Kenya’s youth.
In a nationally televised interview with NTV on June 19, 2025, Maraga, who served as Kenya’s 14th chief justice and headed the Supreme Court, said he aims to offer a leadership style rooted in integrity, mentorship, and reform.
“I consider myself the Gen Z candidate,” he said. “It’s our responsibility to mentor the youth to take over from us.”
Maraga said his campaign will focus on ending police brutality, addressing entrenched corruption, and offering a vision of leadership distinct from what he described as destructive political forces.
“We must reimagine the leadership of our country,” he said. “That’s why I’ve decided to run for president in 2027.”
His understated and sincere approach—marked by humility and a statesmanlike presence—has resonated with a generation disenchanted by political theatrics and traditional campaign rhetoric.
Many young voters view Maraga as a principled leader and elder statesman whose entry into politics signals a possible break from the status quo.
On platforms such as TikTok and X, his candidacy quickly gained traction, with supporters praising his demeanor and integrity. Some even floated the idea of a joint ticket with prominent activist and politician Okiya Omtatah, suggesting the pair could mount a formidable challenge to the current administration.
