The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has moved to quash claims that it has cleared Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat of any wrongdoing in the death of Albert Ojwang, a teacher and blogger who died in police custody last month.
“Reports suggesting that IPOA has exonerated Mr. Lagat are not only premature but also misleading,” Hassan said. “If the investigations find him culpable, IPOA will make appropriate recommendations to hold him to account.”
According to Hassan, IPOA’s investigation into the incident, which commenced on June 8, 2025, is still in progress and has so far led to the arraignment of other suspects discovered in the initial stage of the probe.
The Authority assured the public that the investigation is being conducted without any external interference and in accordance with the laws and regulations governing its work.
Hassan emphasized that IPOA has a keen interest in uncovering the truth about Ojwang’s death and will not hesitate to recommend action against anyone found to be involved, including senior police officers.
The IPOA Chairperson’s statement comes amid concerns about the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death in police custody and the need for a thorough and impartial investigation.
IPOA has urged the public to remain patient and to allow the investigation to run its course, assuring that the Authority will provide updates on the progress of the probe in due course.
