The Open University of Kenya (OUK) and Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at expanding access to higher education, enhancing practical skills training, and improving curriculum development, particularly in fields such as agriculture and veterinary science.

This collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during RVTTI’s 13th International Conference in Eldoret, which brought together over 100 speakers and participants from countries including Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Nigeria, and Iran. The conference, themed “Shaping a Sustainable Future for Employability,” showcased innovative approaches to vocational training and skills development.

Key Objectives and Benefits of the Partnership

The partnership between OUK and RVTTI aims to address regional agricultural needs by providing tailored veterinary-related programs, enhancing practical skills training, and increasing access to online learning opportunities. The collaboration will enable the co-development and delivery of programs that meet current industry requirements, aligning with labor market demands.

Remarks from Key Stakeholders

On behalf of OUK Vice Chancellor Prof. Elijah Omwenga, Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. Caroline Omulando, emphasized the significance of the partnership in addressing regional agricultural needs.

“This partnership with RVTTI will enable us to deliver veterinary-related programs tailored to the needs of this agriculturally rich region, providing our students with essential laboratory access and practical skills necessary for the job market,” said Prof. Omulando.

Prof. Omulando also highlighted the Open University’s capacity to support large numbers of learners through its flexible digital learning platforms.

“Our expansive online learning environment allows RVTTI students to gain practical experience while taking advantage of OUK’s virtual courses, supporting both school-leavers and working professionals pursuing further education,” she added.

RVTTI Principal Ms. Loice Kuto welcomed the agreement, noting that the two institutions will co-develop and deliver programs that meet current industry requirements.

“This partnership will enable joint efforts in curriculum design and rollout, helping us reach a wider audience with training that aligns with labor market demands,” she said.

Prof. David Some, Chair of RVTTI’s Board of Governors, noted the global relevance of open universities in making education more accessible.

“Open universities are among the largest in the world due to their online delivery model. We are honored to be OUK’s regional anchor in Eldoret,” he stated.

Implementation and Future Plans

The agreement will take effect in the upcoming financial year, with a joint implementation committee to be established to oversee and coordinate the rollout of the agreed activities.

“We have already laid the groundwork and are confident in our ability to launch the partnership smoothly,” Prof. Omulando concluded.

The partnership between OUK and RVTTI is expected to have a positive impact on the region, enhancing access to quality education and skills training, and ultimately contributing to the national agenda of upskilling the youth.

Bernard Isalambo, Director of the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) Delivery Unit said, “This event is very timely. Modular curricula will allow young people to earn certifications every three months, giving them the option to either enter the workforce or continue studying. Our aim is to equip youth with the skills they need to compete and succeed.”
