Several police officers stationed at Nairobi’s Central Police Station have been suspended following the death of Albert Ojwang’, who died under suspicious circumstances while in custody.

The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, ordered the interdiction of the officers to allow for an independent investigation into the incident. The announcement was made on Monday, June 9, 2025, by National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.

According to the statement, the suspension affects the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the officer on duty on Saturday, June 7, the cell supervisor, report office personnel, and any other officers present or involved during the period in question.

“To ensure that investigations are carried out thoroughly and impartially, the Inspector General has directed the immediate interdiction of all officers who had any role in handling the deceased,” the NPS said.

Albert Ojwang’, a young man from Kabondo-Kasipul constituency, was reportedly arrested at his home in the presence of his father, Meshack Ojwang’, and briefly detained at Mawego Police Station before being transported nearly 300 kilometers to Central Police Station in Nairobi.

Tragically, when Albert’s father traveled overnight to Nairobi to visit him, he was informed the next morning—Sunday, June 8—that his son had died. The devastated parent, speaking outside the police station, claimed that the family was not allowed to view the cell where Albert had allegedly sustained fatal injuries.

Initial police reports claimed Albert died after hitting his head against a wall inside his cell. This explanation drew widespread skepticism and anger from members of the public, who are now calling for a transparent and independent probe.

Albert’s body was taken to Nairobi Funeral Home (formerly City Mortuary). Police say he was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital after sustaining injuries in custody, but he was declared dead upon arrival.

The NPS reiterated its commitment to human rights, transparency, and accountability, and promised to update the public as the investigation continues.
