The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Elgeyo Marakwet County, convened a meeting in Iten to discuss the implementation and oversight of the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLoCCA) programme at the county level.
The meeting brought together CSO representatives and the County Climate Change Committee to enhance awareness and build capacity among stakeholders to ensure effective delivery of the programme, which focuses on agriculture, water, and environmental projects.
Speaking at the forum, Edah Kipyego, a CSO representative, emphasized the need for civil society to play a more proactive role in monitoring FLoCCA activities and supporting local communities in understanding their impact.
“We are here to emphasize the duties of CSOs and encourage them to take their roles seriously,” she said.
Kipyego further commended NCCK for facilitating the meeting and noted that discussions included creating effective structures to ensure information reaches ward levels.
Norah Chepkong’a, a CSO member from Kapsowar Ward, stressed the need for transparency in the programme’s implementation. “Many citizens are unaware of FLoCCA. Information must come from the grassroots to ensure community engagement,” she stated.
Members of the County Climate Change Committee were also in attendance and were urged to prioritize climate-related projects aligned with the community’s needs.
The FLoCCA programme, which began in 2023, receives both donor and community funding and targets local solutions to climate change challenges.
The meeting concluded with a call for increased awareness campaigns to educate the public on the objectives and benefits of the FLoCCA programme. Stakeholders agreed on the importance of coordinated efforts between government, CSOs, and the community to ensure the success of the initiative.
