Suspect Arrested in Connection with MP Charles Were’s Assassination

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a suspect linked to the assassination of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was fatally shot on April 30, 2025.
The suspect, identified as Amos Barasa Kasili, was apprehended in the Kibera Darajani area of Nairobi. Investigations have revealed that Barasa served as the motorcycle rider who transported the assailant responsible for the MP’s shooting.
The motorcycle, a Bajaj Boxer with registration number KMFZ 413W, was recovered in his possession at the time of arrest.

Forensic evidence and surveillance footage placed Barasa at the scene of the crime, trailing the MP’s vehicle prior to the attack.
During interrogation, Barasa confessed to his involvement, stating that he was hired by the main perpetrators and received a payment of Ksh. 50,000 for his role in the operation.
Authorities have described Barasa as a habitual offender who often poses as a boda boda operator while collaborating with armed criminal gangs.
His criminal record includes previous incarceration at Industrial Area Prison, where he reportedly encountered some of the individuals involved in the assassination plot.
The arrest of Barasa marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the targeted killing of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were. He is currently in custody and is being processed for arraignment as detectives continue to pursue all individuals connected to the crime.
Charles Ong’ondo Were, who served as the MP for Kasipul Constituency in Homa Bay County, was shot dead in Nairobi while in traffic near the City Mortuary roundabout on Ngong Road.
The assassination has prompted a comprehensive investigation aimed at bringing all responsible parties to justice.
