Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening diplomatic and development cooperation with Finland following a historic State Visit by Finnish President Alexander Stubb — the first ever by a Finnish Head of State to Kenya.

During high-level bilateral talks held at State House, President William Ruto described Finland as a “steadfast partner” and a valued ally in Kenya’s development journey, particularly in key sectors such as education, technology, renewable energy, and climate action.

“Kenya deeply values its longstanding friendship with Finland,” President Ruto said. “We are committed to leveraging Finland’s expertise in areas that are critical to our national transformation.”

The visit, which marks a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two countries, included the signing of two key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing political dialogue and cooperation on peacebuilding.

The first MoU focuses on Political Consultations, formalizing structured engagements between the two governments on bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual interest.

“These instruments will help us advance shared values and strengthen global partnerships,” President Ruto noted after the signing ceremony.

President Stubb echoed Kenya’s sentiments, expressing optimism about the growing cooperation between Nairobi and Helsinki. He praised Kenya’s leadership on regional peace initiatives and its strides in renewable energy development, calling the country “a key partner for Finland in Africa.”

The two leaders also discussed trade and investment, with a focus on expanding opportunities for Finnish companies in Kenya’s renewable energy, ICT, and education sectors.

In turn, Kenya expressed interest in tapping into Finland’s advanced education system and green technology expertise to support local innovation and sustainability efforts.

The historic visit signals a new chapter in Kenya-Finland relations, one anchored on mutual respect, shared priorities, and a common vision for a more just and sustainable world.

President Stubb’s visit is expected to catalyze future collaboration in development and diplomacy, paving the way for more joint ventures between the two nations in the years ahead.
