Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has hit out at Bruno Fernandes, questioning the midfielder’s leadership and accountability following another disappointing defensive showing by the Red Devils.

Keane, known for his no-nonsense approach both as a player and a pundit, took issue with Fernandes’ comments after Manchester United’s latest match, in which the Portuguese international spoke about belief among his teammates.

The Irishman, however, was quick to point out what he saw as a glaring lack of on-field leadership.

“He’s talking about his teammates there and belief,” Keane said during a post-match analysis. “But what about his right back who didn’t put a leg up or try to tackle for the goal from Dalot?” His comments appeared to reference a crucial moment in the game where poor defending allowed the opposition to capitalize, resulting in a goal that left fans and pundits frustrated.

Keane stressed the importance of accountability, urging Fernandes to take more initiative in addressing the team’s problems beyond media appearances.

“I hope he’s pulling him into the dressing room, because he keeps talking about belief in the players and my teammates,” Keane added, implying that strong leadership involves more than just motivational soundbites.

The former midfielder, who captained United during a highly successful era under Sir Alex Ferguson, emphasized that real leadership is shown behind the scenes and in moments of confrontation when standards slip.

“A really good teammate puts their hands on each other, whether that’s on the pitch or in the dressing room or on the training ground during the week,” Keane explained, calling for greater unity and responsibility among the squad.

His remarks suggest that Fernandes, as club captain, should be doing more to enforce discipline and demand higher standards from his teammates.

Manchester United have faced growing criticism this season over their inconsistent performances and defensive frailties, with the spotlight now firmly on the leadership within the squad.

As club captain, Fernandes has often been the public face of the team, but Keane’s comments reflect the growing belief that words alone are not enough.

With pressure mounting on the club to turn their season around, Keane’s call for stronger internal leadership may resonate with fans who feel the team lacks the kind of commanding presence that once defined United.
