Ten protesters arrested during demonstrations in Nairobi over the rising cost of fuel have been formally charged with blocking free movement and causing public inconvenience.
The group was arraigned at the City Court on Wednesday, where they pleaded not guilty before the presiding magistrate. However, two additional suspects did not take plea after a lawyer representing the Law Society of Kenya informed the court that they are minors.
The magistrate also ordered the release of the remaining accused persons on a cash bail of Ksh.3,000 each.
Authorities said the 12 individuals were arrested on Tuesday after attempting to stage demonstrations within the Central Business District. Anti-riot police dispersed the protesters, with officials stating that the arrests were necessary to prevent disruption of business activities and maintain public order.
The demonstrations were reportedly fueled by growing public frustration over high fuel prices and the rising cost of living, with mobilisation largely taking place online and lacking centralized leadership.
Those charged include Julias Kamau Kimani, Elisha Ochieng, Collins Otieno Ochieng, Emmanuel Yegon, Dickson Mworia, Brian Mwenda, Jeremiah Mwau, Michael Ngige, Emmanuel Muchui, and Joshua Okayo.
