Veteran Journalist Mohamed Hassan Celebrated After Retiring From KNA Service

Veteran journalist Mohamed Hassan has retired from the Kenya News Agency after 38 years of service, earning praise from colleagues, leaders and media practitioners for his professionalism, mentorship and lasting contribution to journalism in Kenya.

Veteran journalist Mohamed Hassan has officially retired from the Kenya News Agency after 38 years of service in the media and public communication sector.

Mohamed retired on May 8, 2026, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60, bringing to a close a distinguished career that culminated in his role as head of the Mombasa Information Office.

The seasoned media professional, who began his journalism career in 1988, holds a Master of Arts degree in Journalism, Media and Communications from Cardiff University.

Throughout his career, Mohamed rose through the ranks from a reporter to senior administrative leadership positions, earning recognition for mentoring young journalists and championing professionalism in the media industry.

Colleagues and friends described him as passionate, humble and impactful, noting that he played a key role in shaping many interns and upcoming journalists.

During a retirement farewell party organised by friends, colleagues and media practitioners in Mombasa, Citizen TV journalist Francis Mtalaki praised Mohamed as a committed and talented professional whose work ethic inspired many.

“You have motivated, inspired, trained and professionally guided many of us in the field of journalism,” said Shamim Musa.

The colourful event attracted several leaders and dignitaries, including businessman Abubakar Joho, Mombasa Deputy Governor Francis Thoya, Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki, Jomvu MP Badi Twalib and Mombasa County Executive Committee Member Ibrahim Khamis Babangida.

Deputy Governor Thoya commended Mohamed for his dedicated service and urged young journalists to emulate his professionalism and ethical standards.

“Journalists should emulate Mohamed’s selflessness, work ethic and commitment to journalism,” Joho said during the ceremony.

Veteran NTV cameraman Karim Rajan described Mohamed as a respected media personality known for integrity and commitment to excellence.

Meanwhile, Media Council of Kenya Coast Regional Coordinator Maureen Mudi termed Mohamed “an institution with vast knowledge in the media industry,” expressing hope that he would continue mentoring upcoming journalists even in retirement.

In his remarks, Mohamed thanked God for granting him good health throughout his career and expressed gratitude to colleagues for honouring him.

He encouraged young journalists to remain disciplined, focused and committed to serving the public interest in an increasingly competitive media environment.
