Uasin Gishu County has made a great stride toward sustainable development after officially signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Fair and Sustainable Insects Farm Kenya. The agreement, sealed on Thursday morning, marked a transformative shift in how the county handles organic waste-turning what was once seen as a burden into a valuable economic resource.

Governor Jonathan Bii termed the partnership a landmark in the county’s journey into achieving a circular economy that protects not only the environment but also opens opportunities for residents.

Under this new agreement, over 200 tonnes of organic market waste will now be diverted from dumpsites and will be treated using innovative insect-based biotechnology. It will transform such waste into two high-value products: high-protein animal feed and frass fertilizer, a rich organic input that boosts soil health and crop yields.

Governor Bii reiterated that the initiative fuses environmental management with economic empowerment.

“This partnership brings on board an innovative, scientifically-based solution that helps to keep our market centres clean while providing farmers with good-quality feed and fertilizer at reasonable prices,” he said. “It also opens the door for young people to find meaningful employment within the green economy.”

This project is expected to bring hundreds of new jobs at different levels of the value chain. Young people will be engaged in waste collection, sorting, processing, packaging, and distribution of the end products. Apart from minimizing pollution, this program is said to enhance agribusiness and to offer support to local farmers of livestock who often suffer from high feed costs.

In the words of Governor Bii, the partnership reflects his administration’s overall approach of leveraging innovation to solve real challenges faced by communities.

“With this initiative, we are proving that waste can become wealth when managed correctly,” he noted. “Uasin Gishu is choosing a sustainable path-one that ensures a cleaner environment, stronger farming systems, and better economic prospects for our people.”

The County Government will also be very instrumental in providing adequate support for the project’s implementation, such as improving waste-collection infrastructure, creating public awareness, and mobilizing the youth and farmer groups to participate in the project. Officials also plan to work closely with market leadership to ensure smooth coordination and a steady supply of organic waste.

Through such a progressive solution, Uasin Gishu joins the increasing number of counties embracing eco-friendly technologies in the management of waste. The partnership sets a precedent for other regions seeking to convert environmental problems into opportunities for development. Ultimately, this initiative places Uasin Gishu at the forefront of green innovation—on a trajectory toward a future where market waste is not thrown away but converted into a strong driver for jobs, agricultural productivity, and sustainable growth.
