The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the County Government of Uasin Gishu, has officially announced a large-scale immunization campaign targeting Measles-Rubella and Typhoid, following a reported spike in cases across various counties. The nationwide initiative will run from July 4th to July 13th, 2025, and aims to vaccinate children aged 9 months to 14 years.
According to a public notice released by the Ministry of Health and the Uasin Gishu County Department of Health Services, the exercise will be carried out in health facilities, schools, villages, estates, markets, churches, and mobile outreach sites. Importantly, the vaccination will be offered free of charge to all eligible children.
“This campaign is in response to sporadic outbreaks and an alarming increase in Measles-Rubella and Typhoid cases nationally. Vaccines save lives, and we urge all parents and guardians to ensure their children are vaccinated,” read part of the notice.
Rising Cases Prompt Urgent Response
The campaign follows concerns raised by public health experts and surveillance data from the Ministry of Health indicating a worrying resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases, particularly Measles-Rubella and Typhoid fever. According to a report published in early 2025 by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the World Health Organization (WHO), Kenya has witnessed an upsurge in measles outbreaks in at least seven counties over the past six months.
Typhoid fever, which is caused by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with Salmonella Typhi, has also shown increasing resistance to common antibiotics. As a result, the WHO has recommended the integration of Typhoid Conjugate Vaccines (TCVs) in national immunization programs, which Kenya began rolling out in phases in 2022.
Immunization as a Public Health Priority
The immunization campaign underscores Kenya’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under the government’s health pillar of the “Big Four Agenda.” The Ministry of Health has emphasized the importance of preventive health as a cost-effective intervention in mitigating future disease burdens.
Public Encouraged to Participate
County officials and health stakeholders have called on local leaders, religious institutions, and community health workers to support the drive by mobilizing parents and caregivers. With the school calendar in session during the campaign period, health teams are expected to collaborate with learning institutions for in-school vaccinations.
