Currently, six alleged leaders of the criminal gang are facing serious charges in court. Among them, David Kipkosgei Kemboi alias “Chemarget” who is seeking an elective post in Soy

The notorious Barsuliek/Karnet gang, which has been wreaking havoc on the streets of Eldoret, targeting business people, has now extended its reach to political leaders.
Over the past year, these criminal activities have persisted unchecked, with Uasin Gishu County leadership seemingly turning a blind eye.
The latest victim of this criminal syndicate is Soy Ward Member of County Assembly, Isaack Kiptanui Chirchir, who fell prey to the gang’s aggression during an official event. Accompanying Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, Chirchir was allegedly roughed up by the gang members, purportedly acting on directives from individuals close to the governor. A video capturing the incident shows Chirchir being deliberately pulled back and slapped, while the governor appears unperturbed, sparking public outrage and commotion.

In response to this incident, on May 7th, members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly, led by Julius Sang, the Majority Leader and a close ally of the governor, called for swift investigations into the criminal gang and its financiers. Sang emphasized the importance of treating elected officials with utmost respect, highlighting the negative implications of such events on the professionalism of those working closely with the governor.

These incidents not only jeopardize the relationship between the governor’s office and the MCAs but also exacerbate existing tensions between the governor and other members of parliament in Uasin Gishu.
Following a police crackdown resulting in the arrest of nearly 30 gang members, Uasin Gishu County Commander has reassured residents of their safety. Currently, six alleged leaders of the criminal gang are facing serious charges in court. Among them, David Kipkosgei Kemboi alias “Chemarget” who is seeking an elective post in Soy has been remanded at the Eldoret GK Prisons, facing charges of extortion, impersonation, and assault.
Human rights activist Kimutai Kirui, one of the complainants, has consistently urged the governor to disassociate from the criminal gang, particularly as they have received legal representation from the county government’s legal team during the ongoing legal proceedings against them.
