The Uasin Gishu County Government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating alcohol and drug abuse following the graduation of 13 rehabilitated patients from the Moiben County Rehabilitation Centre.

Speaking during the ceremony, County Director of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, Koiya Arap Maiyo, described the milestone as a significant step in restoring lives affected by substance abuse. He noted that the beneficiaries had successfully completed a comprehensive rehabilitation program fully funded by the administration of Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim.

“We are celebrating 13 individuals who have completed their treatment journey. They have been taken through a comprehensive rehabilitation program, and today we are witnessing transformation—not only in them but also in their families,” said Maiyo.

Maiyo revealed that the county spent approximately KSh1 million to support the group’s treatment under a broader initiative providing free rehabilitation services to residents battling addiction. He added that the program has restored hope to many families, with emotional scenes witnessed during the graduation ceremony.

“We have seen parents shed tears of joy after witnessing their children regain their lives. This is a clear indication that rehabilitation works and must be supported,” he said.

The Moiben facility, currently the county’s main rehabilitation centre, has played a key role in offering both inpatient and outpatient services over the past two years, including support for individuals undergoing home-based care. Plans are now underway to expand rehabilitation services to other sub-counties to increase access and address rising cases of substance abuse.

“So far, we have one centre in Moiben, but the county government has already approved the establishment of additional rehabilitation centres in other sub-counties,” Maiyo added.

At the same time, the county has intensified its crackdown on illegal alcohol and drug trade. Authorities recently seized over 12,500 litres of illicit alcohol and arrested several suspects linked to the illegal business.

“We will not relent in our crackdown. Those engaging in the manufacture and sale of illegal substances will face the full force of the law,” he warned.

Maiyo also raised concern over the increasing targeting of youth, especially during school holidays, urging parents and communities to remain vigilant. He emphasized the need for close collaboration between the county government and security agencies to dismantle illegal alcohol outlets and drug networks.

During the event, recovery champions and community representatives called for collective responsibility in addressing substance abuse. One of the graduates shared a personal testimony on overcoming addiction.

“I was deeply affected by addiction and had lost direction. Through this program, I have learned discipline, responsibility, and the importance of making the right choices,” he said.

He encouraged others struggling with addiction to seek help, noting that treatment is accessible and free under the county program.

“Recovery starts with accepting that you need help. Once you take that step, there is support available,” he added.

The graduation marked the seventh cohort from the Moiben Rehabilitation Centre, highlighting the county’s continued investment in social programs aimed at restoring dignity and productivity among affected individuals. Authorities have urged residents battling addiction to take advantage of the free rehabilitation services, emphasizing that recovery is achievable with the right support systems.
