The County Government of Uasin Gishu reaffirmed its commitment to boosting trade and industrialization during a panel discussion at the ongoing Eldoret International Business Summit, hosted by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI).

Speaking during the panel session on Friday, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade and Cooperatives, Martha Cheruto, outlined key achievements aimed at improving the county’s business environment.

Cheruto highlighted the establishment of policies and regulations designed to facilitate trade, aligned with the county’s Nguzo Kumi Agenda and the national Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

“Eldoret is strategically located for businesses, and stakeholders should take advantage of the North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB), headquartered here, to expand their business reach,” Cheruto stated. She added that the county had launched an investment guide to streamline market access for traders, ensuring they operate with greater ease and efficiency.

Cheruto challenged businesses to diversify their products, emphasizing the need for high-value crop production to support the ongoing construction of the County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP). “We must ensure the sustainability of raw materials to support this multi-million project,” she urged.

Joining her on the panel, CECM for Roads, Eng. Joseph Lagat, highlighted the county’s focus on improving infrastructure to support industrialization.

“We are constructing bridges to interconnect villages and improving drainage systems, which are vital for the aggregation of industrial produce,” Eng. Lagat said.

He noted that 10% of the county’s budget is dedicated to road maintenance and improvement, with a strategy focused on grading and gravelling rural roads and maintaining bitumen standards in urban areas.

The panel also featured KNCCI President Dr. Eric Rutto, who called on young people to seize the business opportunities available.

“We encourage young entrepreneurs to join KNCCI. We are offering free membership until you finish school and have a program to train 120 businesses for export,” Dr. Rutto announced.

The three-day summit, themed around growth, connection, and transformation, aims to showcase Eldoret’s potential as a regional hub for innovation, investment, and economic expansion.

With ongoing strategic initiatives, Uasin Gishu County is positioning itself as a leader in fostering a vibrant trade and industrial environment for local and international investors.
