Uasin Gishu County Commander Benjamin Mwathi has appealed to school authorities to hire police sniffer dogs to assist them in detecting bhang as schools re-open for the third term. Mwathi was concerned about the growing cases of students using bhang and he called on teachers and heads of schools to be vigilant in an attempt to save the lives of youth from being ruined by drug abuse.
Speaking to the media at the Baharini Police Post, Mwathi revealed that overnight, the police had seized bhang worth Ksh 28.6 million. The authorities were still in the process of establishing the drugs’ final destination, he further stated, but assured the public that investigations were ongoing. Two suspects had already been arrested over the illicit drug trade.
Mwathi also warned drug dealers of a harsh reprimand, telling them that Eldoret, a prominent town in Uasin Gishu, is not a path for prohibited drugs. He bluntly indicated that the days of drug dealers in the region are numbered, and they ought to prepare for the consequences of their actions. He also urged the local authorities and citizens to be vigilant and report suspicious activity.
Besides ensuring the issue of bhang use in schools is addressed, Mwathi also invited the Uasin Gishu hawkers association to join forces with the police in the fight against the sale of illicit drugs. He re-emphasized that a collaboration between the locals and the police is essential in preventing the spread of illicit drugs in the region.
Mwathi further gave guidance to truck operators, urging them to be keen if they suspect that their trucks are being used to transport illegal drugs. He warned that anyone found engaging in such an activity would be faced with severe legal consequences and advised truck operators to ensure that their trucks are not being utilized for any illegal activities.
The problem of youth drug abuse has dominated the region. In a Baraza la Usalama (Security Meeting) in Uasin Gishu County last week, the Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen also cautioned youths against indulging in the use of illegal brew and bhang at the detriment of their studies and future.
