The County Government of Turkana has officially assumed management of the Kalobeyei modern garage, with Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai announcing plans to transform the facility into a hub for youth and women empowerment through technical training, skills development and job creation.
Governor Lomorukai received the keys to the facility from UN Women Operations Manager Linner Ng’eno in a symbolic handover ceremony during the first day of his development tour in Turkana West.
The event was witnessed by Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus, County Secretary Amb. Richard Ekai, Deputy Speaker Gilbert Topos and other senior county officials.“As a county, we appreciate UN Women and Peace Winds Japan for their investment in this garage,” Lomorukai said. “We intend to use it to equip youth and women with marketable skills that will empower them economically.”Ng’eno reiterated UN Women’s commitment to supporting economic inclusion initiatives and said the project aims to foster harmony between the host community and refugees living in the area.“Our goal is to create diversified opportunities for both youth and women.
We are confident this facility will serve its purpose and promote cohesion,” she said. Before the official handover, county officials inspected the facility and viewed its cutting-edge vehicle diagnostics and repair equipment. The garage, equipped with modern technology, has been designed to function both as a training institution and as a fully operational commercial garage. The county government plans to roll out structured training and employment programs to make full use of the facility.
Officials said the garage is expected to open immediate career opportunities for local youth and women, especially those interested in automotive mechanics. The governor said that beyond providing practical skills, the initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote economic transformation in the county by integrating vulnerable groups into productive sectors.A number of Members of the County Assembly from Turkana West also attended the ceremony, expressing their support for the county’s strategy to boost local employment and self-reliance through the new facility.
