In a momentous stride towards fortifying primary healthcare services and expediting the realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Trans Nzoia County, a benevolent contribution of medical equipment valued at Sh30,256,754 has been bestowed by USAID AMPATH Uzima. This timely endowment is poised to play a pivotal role in augmenting maternal and newborn health outcomes within the county.

Professor Sylvester Kimaiyo, the Country Chair of USAID AMPATH Uzima, underscored the organization’s dedication to collaborating with the county in addressing pressing health issues, particularly in the domain of maternal health. “We are committed to outfitting healthcare facilities in this county to ensure that primary healthcare is adequately dispensed, and mothers and children receive quality care during their visits to these facilities,” he affirmed.

The extensive consignment encompasses indispensable medical apparatus such as neonatal incubators, operating theatre lights and tables, autoclave machines, blood refrigerators, handheld fetal Doppler machines, and assorted training models and non-pneumatic anti-shock garments in the realm of medical technologies. This critical equipment will be allocated to three major health facilities in the county, with Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital slated to receive the lion’s share.

Expressing gratitude for the donation, Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya accentuated its significance in advancing maternal and newborn health outcomes. “This equipment will significantly bolster our maternal and newborn divisions, allowing us to address challenges within this department and prevent avoidable losses,” he articulated.

Underlining its commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure, the county government has allocated Sh90 million from the supplementary budget towards the completion of the Kijana Wamalwa Teaching and Referral Hospital. This financial allocation aims to ensure the comprehensive finalization of the facility, enabling the county to focus on furnishing this multibillion-shilling project.

Governor Natembeya underscored the strategic importance of the hospital, considering its location along a bustling transport corridor and its potential to serve as a vital emergency care facility. “We are dedicated to fully equipping this facility to enhance its capacity to handle emergencies effectively, given its strategic location, and to alleviate the congestion at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital,” he emphasized.

Beyond Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital, healthcare facilities in Endebess, Cherengany, and Saboti sub-counties are also set to benefit from the distribution of the medical equipment. This inclusive approach ensures that the positive impact of the donation permeates across the entirety of the county.

The arrival of this medical equipment signifies a significant milestone in Trans Nzoia County’s pursuit of Universal Health Coverage. With the support of USAID AMPATH Uzima and the unwavering dedication of the county government, the prospects for improved maternal and newborn health outcomes in the region are promising.
