Three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers have died and seven others are nursing serious injuries after their patrol vehicle hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the Sankuri–Kiunga Main Supply Route (MSR) on Tuesday afternoon.

In an official statement, KDF confirmed the incident, calling it a cowardly attack on troops who were on routine patrol near the volatile Kenya-Somalia border.

“Early this afternoon, Kenya Defence Forces troops on patrol encountered an improvised explosive device. Regrettably, three gallant soldiers succumbed to their injuries,” read part of the dispatch from KDF’s Strategic Communications team.

The army said the seven injured soldiers were quickly evacuated to a hospital in Kiunga, where they are undergoing specialized treatment. Their condition is being closely monitored.

Multi-Agency Response Underway
Immediately after the attack, KDF and other security agencies launched a multi-agency operation in pursuit of the assailants, believed to be part of a suspected terror group operating in the region.

“The forces have intensified surveillance and security operations, manning all routes in and out of the area to deny the enemy freedom of movement,” the statement added.

Fallen Heroes
KDF mourned the three soldiers, calling them heroes who paid the ultimate price while defending the nation.

“These soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Kenya. The entire KDF fraternity condoles with their families during this difficult time.”

The attack underscores the growing threat posed by IEDs along key military supply routes, particularly in areas close to Kenya’s eastern border. The Sankuri–Kiunga route, where the incident occurred, has previously been flagged as a hotspot for militant activity.

KDF Remains Vigilant
Despite the loss, KDF emphasized that it remains undeterred and fully committed to its mandate of defending the country from external threats.

“Hot pursuit operations are ongoing. Our forces remain alert and resolute in their mission to safeguard Kenya’s borders,” the statement concluded.

The latest attack highlights the persistent security threats facing frontline troops, and once again brings to the fore the sacrifices made daily by Kenya’s uniformed officers in their fight against terror.
