The state has opened six recognized fan zones where the spectators will be in a position to watch Harambee Stars’ decisive African Nations Championship (CHAN) game against Zambia on Sunday.
Cabinet Secretary of Youth Affairs, the Creative Economy and Sport Salim Mvurya clarified the zones are meant to accord fans an energetic and safe match-day experience without clogging the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The designated areas are Uhuru Park in the CBD, Lucky Summer–Ngomo area behind Kasarani Stadium, Dandora Stadium, Utalii’s Stima Club, Jacaranda Grounds, and Kibera DC Grounds. These venues are spread across key city neighbourhoods to bring the stadium vibe closer to communities.
“These fan zones will allow more Kenyans to enjoy the game in comfort while helping us control attendance at Kasarani in line with CAF requirements,” Mvurya said.
Security within and in the vicinity of the main stadium will be intensified. Additional officers shall be deployed to protect fans, players, officials, and match personnel. Ticket holders shall be the only people admitted to Kasarani.
Mvurya had also chaired a top security meeting to prepare the nation for the match. “We have set up watch zones and shall provide them with security as well. I appeal to Kenyans to welcome Harambee Stars in an orderly manner,” he stated.
The CS reminded people that the performance of Kenya in the tournament will dictate whether Kenya hosts the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) or not. Poor management of the crowds will cause Kenya to forfeit the hosting privilege to Tanzania and Uganda, the other two co-hosts.
He also cautioned against fake tickets. “Be vigilant against individuals who are pretending to sell tickets. Some pretend to buy original tickets and resell them on WhatsApp. You will not be granted entry into the stadium if you have not bought your ticket online,” he warned.
Safety is the reason CAF has placed a strict cap of 27,000 spectators for Sunday’s match. The cap is meant to maintain order and conform to international safety standards.
The government is asking all those fans who do not possess match tickets to use the official fan zones, which ensure an electrifying ambiance and full coverage of the match.
