In a significant legal development, fifteen youths accused of vandalizing and looting Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi’s Timba XO Club during the anti-Finance Bill protests on June 25, 2024, have been unconditionally released.

This decision follows an affidavit submitted before the High Court in Eldoret, in which the investigative officer detailed the events leading up to the incident. According to the affidavit, at approximately noon on June 25, a group of protesters marched along the Eldoret-Nakuru highway before forcibly entering the club and stealing goods worth millions. Among the stolen items were sound systems, televisions, laptops, electronics, utensils, water pumps, and gas cylinders. The exact value of the stolen property remains undetermined.

Deputy Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Cherono Kesse, confirmed that after careful deliberation, the directors of Timba XO opted to drop the case, leading to the unconditional release of the accused. This decision aligns with MP Oscar Sudi’s earlier commitment to forgive the youth involved.

Sudi, a close ally of President William Ruto, emphasized that he bore no resentment towards the protesters, attributing their actions to possible manipulation by political rivals. Expressing his Christian faith, he remarked:

“I am a Christian, and the Bible commands me to forgive those who have wronged me. We must forgive one another, and I urge Kenyans who lost their properties to do the same for the sake of peace in our country.”

Reflecting on his own journey from humble beginnings, the legislator stated:

“I come from a poor family. I have come a long way, having worked as a matatu tout before rising to serve as a Member of Parliament. It is a miracle, and for that reason, I cannot use my position in government to frustrate the very people who voted for me.”

Sudi further revealed that he has already initiated renovations at Timba XO Club and remains committed to continuing his business operations. He accused unnamed individuals of orchestrating the attack by hiring youth to destroy his property and incite divisions within Uasin Gishu County.

Reaffirming his commitment to fostering unity, he stated:

“I will continue to fight against ethnicity and tribalism to ensure that all communities in Uasin Gishu live in harmony.”
