Nairobi City County Senator Edwin Sifuna on Thursday demanded urgent Senate investigations into two recent murders at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and the worsening student housing crisis in public universities.
Speaking in the Senate, Sifuna called for immediate action from parliamentary committees on health and education to address these growing safety and welfare concerns.
Sifuna highlighted two killings that occurred within the same KNH ward in February and July 2025. “The fact that two patients were murdered in the same ward, months apart, raises disturbing questions about the safety of our hospitals,” he said. “We may be dealing with a serial killer who has gone unnoticed within Kenya’s largest referral facility.”
He tasked the Senate Health Committee with investigating the incidents, auditing KNH’s security protocols, and reviewing the continued detention of medically discharged patients.
Separately, Sifuna addressed the sharp increase in university hostel fees, saying the hikes are driving students into unsafe off-campus housing. “Students are being forced into slums because they cannot afford the new hostel rates,” he said.
He urged the Education Committee to examine the justification behind the fee increases and assess whether student loan allocations have been adjusted to reflect the rising cost of living.
