Royal Media Services Group Editorial Director Linus Kaikai has been sworn in as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, marking his official entry into the legal profession. Kaikai was among 916 petitioners who took the oath during a swearing-in ceremony presided by Chief Justice Martha Koome at the Supreme Court on Thursday.

During the ceremonial proceedings, the new advocates took their oath before the Chief Justice and signed the Roll of Advocates, marking their formal entry into their profession. For Kaikai, a journalist with over two decades of experience, this admission represents the addition of the legal profession to an already illustrious media and public communication career path.

In a speech, Senior Counsel Philip Murgor, Chairman of the Senior Counsel Bar, underscored the character, ethos, and public interest that ought to go hand in hand with legal practice. “Winning at all costs will cost you too. There will be moments when you are called upon to defend citizens and uphold justice. Never shy away from that duty,” SC Murgor said. He further referenced the Gen Z protests, where hundreds of young demonstrators were detained, highlighting the lawyer’s role in providing guidance and pro bono legal services during critical moments.

Law Society of Kenya LSK President Faith Odhiambo encouraged the newly sworn-in advocates to uphold justice and citizens’ rights at a time when national discourse continues to negotiate civic freedoms. “You are a generation that refuses to work in silence. As you join the profession, remember that justice is not a slogan; it is a long-term commitment. Our role is to stand up for each other,” she said. Odhiambo also specially recognized Kaikai, who she called upon to prioritize the obligations of an advocate over his prior commitments as a journalist, noting that the legal oath carries a distinct and solemn responsibility.

Further guidance came from Law Society of East Africa President Ramadhan Abubakar, who encouraged the new advocates to broaden their practice across the region. “From today, your words carry weight and your actions shape institutions. You are now authorized to practice in all East African countries. The lawyer who views the region as a whole has the power to shape the future,” Mr. Abubakar stated, urging them to embrace a transnational perspective in their legal careers. The ceremony emphasized not only the personal achievement of Linus Kaikai but also the broader responsibilities of advocates in ensuring justice, ethics, and public service throughout Kenya and within the East African region. To Kaikai, this is a milestone in history, as he now combines his experience in media with the authority and responsibilities of a legal practitioner.
