Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo has highlighted the importance of the ongoing construction of Dhogoye Bridge in Usenge, Siaya County, saying the project will improve connectivity and expand access to economic and social opportunities.
Located where River Yala drains into Lake Victoria, the Dhogoye crossing has for years posed safety risks to residents, with rising water levels claiming lives and disrupting movement between communities.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is undertaking the project to restore a vital transport link along the Bondo–Usenge–Osieko corridor, which has frequently experienced disruptions during periods of high water.
The interruptions have affected residents travelling to markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services, while also hindering the movement of goods and local trade.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to provide a reliable all-weather crossing, improve transport safety and strengthen links between Siaya and Busia counties.
The project is also expected to support businesses, ease the movement of agricultural produce and improve access to livelihood opportunities for communities around the Lake Victoria basin.
Omollo said progress on the project had benefited from coordination involving the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, local leaders, community members and implementing agencies.
The collaboration has helped address operational challenges and sustain construction activities.
The bridge is expected to reduce the isolation experienced by residents during periods of rising water levels while providing a more dependable route for accessing essential services and markets.
Its completion will be a significant step towards improving transport infrastructure and strengthening economic and social ties across the Lake Victoria region.
