Residents of Kipkaren took to the streets on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, to support Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, who has faced scrutiny following the death of blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody.

Chanting and waving twigs, the peaceful demonstrators insisted Lagat, a local figure known for integrity, is being unfairly targeted by political agendas and media narratives.

The community, including those who grew up with Lagat, defended his character, citing his professionalism and kindness, even to street children. They view him as a scapegoat amid growing national outrage over police brutality.

Ojwang, a 31-year-old teacher and blogger from Homa Bay, was arrested over alleged defamatory content against Lagat, leading to his transfer to Nairobi’s Central Police Station.

Lagat stepped aside on June 16, pledging cooperation with the investigation and offering condolences.

President William Ruto labeled the incident “heartbreaking,” promising justice, though public trust in the police remains strained. Lagat’s deputy now oversees operations as the nation awaits further developments.
