Prison officer allegedly locks up, threatens, and sexually assaults college student at Ngeria Prison in Eldoret

Annette (not her real name), a 22-year-old college student, bravely speaks out about her harrowing ordeal, shedding light on alleged abuse of power by a senior prison officer at Ngeria GK Prison
A senior prison officer, Eric Mutai, stationed at Ngeria GK Prison in Eldoret, is under investigation following serious allegations of sexual assault made by a 22-year-old college student. The case has sparked public outrage and renewed focus on power abuses within law enforcement institutions.
A Chance Encounter
The alleged victim, Annette (not her real name), a student at a technical institution in Uasin Gishu County, stated that she met Mutai on October 20 outside Reale Hospital, where he approached her and borrowed her phone number.
“He seemed polite and professional, so I didn’t see any harm in sharing my number,” Annette told investigators.
On Friday, October 8, Mutai called her, asking to buy her lunch. “He sounded very polite and insisted it would just be lunch, nothing more,” Annette recounted. Around 2:00 p.m., Mutai arrived at her school in a GK vehicle.

“At the time, I didn’t think much of it, but I have since learned that the vehicle belonged to the officer in charge of Ngeria Prison,” Annette added.
Mutai invited her to lunch, and she agreed. “I trusted him because he appeared genuine,” Annette said. “He let me choose the restaurant, and everything felt normal—until I got into his car.”
A Harrowing Turn
Annette recounted that Mutai had another man in the car when he arrived. Along the way, Mutai dropped off the other person and told her they needed to return the vehicle to his boss before proceeding to the restaurant.
Instead of fulfilling his promise, he drove her to his house inside the Ngeria GK Prison compound.
“Once we arrived, he locked the door and wouldn’t let me leave,” Annette alleged. “He forced me to clean his house and later padlocked the door.”
That evening, Annette said the situation escalated into a nightmare.
“He handcuffed me and forced himself on me,” she stated. “I began to beg for my life. I could hear him making phone calls to unknown people, asking if they had signed in the gun.”
A Night of Fear
Annette also claimed that Mutai threatened her with violence, saying he had access to ammunition. “He said he could hurt me and no one would know. I was terrified,” she revealed.
Despite her fear, Annette discreetly contacted a friend, sharing her location and the situation. “My friend was so worried. She told me to stay calm while she sought help,” Annette explained.
The friend reported the matter to Langas Police Station, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement.
Investigation Underway
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed the incident had been reported. “The allegations are severe, and we are taking every necessary step to investigate and ensure justice is served,” Mwanthi stated.
Police are currently compiling evidence, including Annette’s statement and physical evidence from the alleged crime scene.
Legal and Public Reactions

The case has drawn condemnation from legal advocates and civil society groups, who have called for systemic reforms to prevent such abuses.
“This case illustrates a troubling abuse of authority,” said Kimutai Kirui, a legal advocate. “It undermines public trust and highlights the urgent need for accountability within law enforcement institutions.”
Women’s rights organizations have also weighed in, demanding stronger protections for victims of abuse. “It’s critical that victims feel safe to report such incidents without fear of retaliation,” said a representative from a local advocacy group.
Path to Justice
The case has been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which will determine the next legal steps. Public pressure continues to mount, with citizens demanding transparency and swift justice.
“Law enforcement officers are entrusted to protect the public, not exploit their positions of power,” said a concerned resident.
As investigations progress, Annette and her family await justice in a case that could set an important precedent for addressing abuse within law enforcement.
