Kieni Member of Parliament, Njoroge Wainaina, has urged the government to fulfill its commitment of providing employment opportunities for young Kenyans who have completed technical courses.

Addressing the graduation ceremony of over a thousand youth who undertook nineteen short-term technical courses across seven institutions in Kieni, sponsored by NGCDF, Wainaina appealed to Labour Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore to reassure graduates of job prospects abroad.”I am urging our CS Florence Bore to give hope to the young men and women graduating with the technical skills that there are jobs available as promised by the government,” stated Wainaina.

The initiative to fully sponsor these short-term courses, according to Wainaina, was motivated by the need to combat drug and substance abuse among idle youth in villages, unable to pursue higher education due to poor academic performance.

“Being idle in the villages had greatly contributed to an increase in drugs and substance abuse in many areas as young men and women were lying idle in the villages due to hopelessness due to a lack of sources of income, that is why we felt the need to enrich them with skills that can help them earn a living,” explained Wainaina.

Prominent figures attending the ceremony, including Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, pledged support for youth seeking employment opportunities abroad. Senator Wamatinga announced plans to establish a learning center offering free German language courses to those interested in working overseas, drawing from his own experience of residing in Germany for over two decades.

Meanwhile, Nyeri County MP Rahab Mukami committed to providing computer facilities in her office to assist youth in job applications, and Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri emphasized the importance of ensuring that local tenders prioritize hiring skilled graduates within their constituencies.

Encouraging entrepreneurship among the graduates, Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto urged them to collaborate and establish their own companies, leveraging their diverse skill sets.

CS Bore reiterated the government’s efforts in securing job opportunities abroad through bilateral labor agreements with Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom.”The government has actively pursued four bilateral labor agreements with the state of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom,” affirmed CS Bore.
