Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has inaugurated the new University of Nairobi (UoN) Council, calling for collaboration, respect for roles, and strong governance.

During the ceremony at UoN, CS Ogamba stressed the importance of teamwork. He told council members to avoid micromanaging the university’s management and staff.

The council will now be led by veteran academic and administrative Prof. Chacha Nyagoiti Chacha.

Ogamba warned against repeating past mistakes that weakened the previous council. Internal wrangles, overstepping roles, and attempts to discipline staff caused serious governance issues.

“Focus on your role. Do not try to manage day-to-day operations or discipline staff. That is not your work,” Ogamba told the council.

He explained that the previous council collapsed due to poor consultation and interference with management duties. These conflicts hurt UoN’s reputation and blocked key partnerships.

Ogamba also raised concern over the university’s many legal battles. He revealed that UoN is currently entangled in over 200 court cases. According to him, these disputes are draining public funds and distracting the university from its core mission—education and research.

“Your first task is to review all these cases. Look for solutions, including possible settlements. Free the university from this legal burden so it can return to its academic responsibilities,” Ogamba said.

The CS further advised the council to seek guidance from the Attorney General’s office. He urged them to ensure all decisions comply with the law and serve the institution’s best interests.

Ogamba emphasized that successful leadership depends on listening, consulting widely, and respecting institutional boundaries.

With the installation of the new council, UoN—Kenya’s oldest and largest university—enters a new phase. The government expects the council to restore stability, rebuild partnerships, and strengthen governance.

Ogamba expressed confidence in the new leadership, noting that proper teamwork and sound decision-making will help the university achieve its vision of academic excellence.
