Nyatike MP Advocates for Hardship for Civil Servants as Parents Embrace Schools within the Area

He urged ODM leaders and supporters to rally behind the party for its leadership, noting, though, that unity and preparedness will matter as the country marches closer to the next general elections.

Nyatike Member of Parliament Tom Odege has positioned himself to take on the issue concerning the grant of hardship allowance to civil servants working within Nyatike constituency. According to Odege, Nyatike is an area that meets the qualifications for such allowances due to the difficult climatic conditions in which it is found.

His remarks were made during the handover of a school bus to Gunga Senior School in Nyatike West Sub-County, Odege added that Nyatike was a semiarid zone and could therefore be factored in by national government in the provision of hardship allowances to public officers. He claimed that it is not fair for civil servants assigned in this region to be left out of the grant while other officers from other areas experiencing similar environmental situations benefit.

Other posts Odege holds include Secretary General Civil Servants Union of Kenya. According to him, one cannot expect government officials to work better in poor working conditions without just proper remuneration. The member added that lack of hardship allowance has lowered morale for civil servants working in this area and promised to continue fighting for equity and fair government policy.

He again extended his message on Grade 10 placement process by encouraging parents to consider local schools in Nyatike and Migori County for their children. He pointed out that almost all the major secondary schools in the constituency have done considerable improvements in buildings and learning facilities and are well prepared to cater to students’ demands.

While touring some schools to see development works on-going and completed, Odege noted that Sori Comprehensive School and Sori Senior School will, when completed in February, benefit from the Sh1.4 billion Sori Affordable Housing Project. This, according to him, will spur local development and provide access to social amenities, including education infrastructure.

Any parent whose child has been placed in a school outside Migori County but is facing financial or logistical challenges is urged to consider transferring the child into county schools before the placement window closes. This would ensure continuity in learning while minimizing the burden of costs and logistics on parents, according to the Member of Parliament.

On national politics, Odege welcomed the pre-election talks initiated by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 general election. Early engagement and dialogue between the political parties are imperative for a stable political environment.

He further urged leaders and supporters within ODM to rally behind the party for its leadership, noting that it will be key for the country as it nears the next general elections to have the party united and prepared.

He can be expected to fight for the grant of hardship allowance to civil servants in Nyatike constituency. According to him, it meets all the conditions for getting this allowance because of the fierce climate.

While giving a bus to Gunga Senior School in Nyatike West Sub-County, Odege added that Nyatike qualifies as a semiarid area, and its condition should be taken into consideration by the national government in the announcement of hardship allowances to public officers. He said it was unworthy that civil servants who were posted here should be denied the allowance while other officers from different areas sharing the same unfavorable environmental conditions were benefiting.
